The art of achieving more while doing less

In a world obsessed with productivity, the mantra often seems to be ‘do more to achieve more’. But is this relentless pursuit of constant action truly the best approach?

I’d argue not.

Rather, I believe it’s possible to accomplish more while actually doing less. This isn’t about laziness or avoiding work, but about working smarter and tapping into our innate creativity.

The key lies in learning how to harness our natural abilities, make the most of our time, and align our actions with our deepest values. It’s a mindset shift that can lead to a significantly more fulfilling and productive life.

Here are 10 tips to help you master this art of achieving more while doing less.

1) Embrace the power of ‘no’

In our pursuit to achieve more, it’s easy to fall into the trap of saying ‘yes’ to everything. We often take on more tasks, projects, and responsibilities, thinking that this will lead us to more success.

However, this isn’t always the case.

Every time we say ‘yes’ to one thing, we’re implicitly saying ‘no’ to something else. Our time, energy and attention are finite resources, and when we spread ourselves too thin, we dilute our effectiveness and productivity.

The art of achieving more while doing less lies in the judicious use of the word ‘no’. This doesn’t mean rejecting every request that comes your way, but rather learning to discern which opportunities align with your core values and long-term goals.

When you start saying ‘no’ to things that are not essential or meaningful to you, you free up your resources for those activities that truly matter. This leads not only to greater productivity but also a deeper sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

So don’t be afraid to say ‘no’. It’s not a sign of weakness or unhelpfulness. Rather, it’s a powerful tool for creating a life that resonates with your truest self.

2) Prioritize mindfulness and presence

In this digital age, we are constantly bombarded with information and demands for our attention. This can lead to a state of constant distraction where we’re physically present but mentally elsewhere.

I’ve found that taking time for mindfulness practices can be a game changer in achieving more while doing less.

Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment, aware of our thoughts, feelings, and the world around us. It’s not about clearing our minds, but rather observing without judgment. This mindful presence allows us to respond rather than react to life’s challenges, enhancing our decision-making and focus.

By incorporating mindfulness practices into our daily routines – such as meditation, yoga or even mindful eating – we can improve our overall well-being, reduce stress, and increase productivity. We become more efficient in our tasks as we are fully engaged in them, saving time and energy in the process.

As the renowned spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle once said, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.” Making mindfulness a priority not only enriches our lives but enables us to achieve more with less effort.

3) Let go of the desire to be liked

We live in a world where acceptance and approval are often equated with success. However, constantly seeking validation from others can limit our capacity to live authentically.

In my journey, I’ve learned that true freedom comes when we let go of the desire to be liked by everyone. It’s about being true to ourselves, even if it means facing disapproval or criticism from others.

This doesn’t mean disregarding the feelings of others, but rather making decisions based on our own values and principles. It’s about recognizing that we can’t please everyone and that’s okay.

In our rush to achieve more, we often forget to listen to our bodies. We push through exhaustion, ignore signals of stress, and deny ourselves the rest that we need. This can lead to burnout and negatively impact our health and well-being.

One of the most empowering shifts I’ve made is to start respecting my natural rhythm. Instead of trying to fit into a one-size-fits-all productivity mold, I began paying attention to when I naturally feel most energetic, creative, and focused.

For some of us, that might mean being a night owl rather than an early bird. For others, it might mean taking regular breaks throughout the day or carving out quiet time for deep work.

It’s about recognizing that we are not machines. We have cycles of activity and rest, and respecting these cycles can dramatically improve our productivity and well-being.

This may not be the conventional wisdom on productivity, but it’s a radically honest approach that acknowledges our human limits while maximizing our potential. It’s an affirmation of our inherent worth and dignity, not as cogs in a productivity machine, but as complex, unique individuals with diverse needs and capabilities.

To thrive in this world, we need to honor our natural rhythms and create work habits that align with them. By doing less in this way, we can actually achieve more – not just in terms of output, but also in terms of health, happiness, and overall quality of life.

5) Embrace the process of continual learning

One of the most powerful ways to achieve more while doing less is by embracing a mindset of continual learning. Often, we get so caught up in our routines and established ways of doing things that we overlook opportunities for growth and innovation.

Yet, the world around us is constantly changing, and if we’re not learning, we’re not staying relevant or growing. This doesn’t mean chasing every new trend or buzzword, but rather continually expanding our knowledge and skills in ways that align with our goals and values.

Learning isn’t limited to formal education or professional development. It’s about staying curious, asking questions, seeking out different perspectives, and being open to new ideas.

This may seem paradoxical, but embracing this approach can lead to greater achievement and fulfillment. By letting go of the illusion of control, we free ourselves up to engage more fully with life and unlock our true potential.

7) Cultivate an attitude of gratitude

It’s easy to overlook the power of gratitude in our pursuit of more. We’re often so focused on what we want to achieve that we forget to appreciate what we already have.

Gratitude shifts our focus from lack to abundance. Instead of constantly striving for more, we start to see the wealth that already exists in our lives. This doesn’t mean we stop pursuing our goals, but rather that we do so with a deeper sense of contentment and fulfillment.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can have profound effects on our well-being and productivity. Studies have shown that gratitude can reduce stress, improve sleep, boost morale, and even enhance physical health.

Moreover, when we’re grateful, we’re more likely to be present, engaged, and appreciative of the journey, not just the destination. This can make our pursuits more enjoyable and sustainable in the long run.

So, take time each day to count your blessings. It could be as simple as writing in a gratitude journal or mentally noting three things you’re grateful for each morning. By cultivating an attitude of gratitude, you can achieve more while doing less.

8) Embrace failure as an opportunity for growth

In a culture that values success and achievement, failure can be a tough pill to swallow. Many of us fear failure so much that it paralyzes us or keeps us stuck in our comfort zones.

Yet, if we shift our perspective, we can see that failure is not the opposite of success but a stepping stone towards it. Each failure brings valuable lessons and feedback that can guide us towards our goals.

Embracing failure requires courage and resilience. It means being willing to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. It’s about seeing every setback as an opportunity for growth and innovation.

This aligns with one of my core beliefs that every challenge contains within it the seeds of creative possibility. When we embrace failure in this way, we not only become more resilient but also more creative and innovative.

So, don’t be afraid to fail. See it as part of your journey towards achieving more while doing less. The more we learn from our failures, the closer we get to our goals.

9) Practice self-compassion

In our drive to achieve more, we often put immense pressure on ourselves. We set high standards, push ourselves hard, and beat ourselves up when we fall short.

While it’s important to strive for excellence, this harsh self-criticism can be counterproductive. It can lead to stress, burnout, and a negative self-image.

Practicing self-compassion means treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer a friend. It’s about acknowledging our humanity, accepting our imperfections, and being gentle with ourselves when we stumble.

Self-compassion doesn’t mean letting ourselves off the hook or shirking responsibility. It’s about recognizing that everyone makes mistakes and experiences setbacks. Instead of berating ourselves for them, we can use them as opportunities for learning and growth.

By cultivating self-compassion, we can reduce stress, increase resilience, and enhance our overall well-being. Plus, when we’re kinder to ourselves, we’re likely to be kinder to others too.

So remember to be gentle with yourself on your journey to achieve more while doing less. You’re human, and you’re doing the best you can. That’s something to be proud of.
